Summary:
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation of Bangladesh, was born on 17th March, 1920 in Tungipara village in Gopalganj district. During his youthful days he was a Muslim League activist participating in the creation of Pakistan. But he later became disillusioned with the Islamist state of Pakistan and leading his party Awami League initiated a secular Bengalee nationalist movement which through a bloodstained liberation war in 1971 resulted in the creation of an independent Bangladesh. People of Bangladesh declared Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, first as Bangabandhu [Friend of Bengal] and then as their Father of the Nation. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib began his career as a pro-Western democrat. But with the experience of running Bangladesh for three and half years, one of the poorest and immensely problem ridden countries of the then world, through "Bangladesh Peasant Workers Awami League" [BAKSAL], formed a socialist-oriented one party rule. By a conspiracy hatched by national and international forces, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family members, were brutally murdered by some wayward Bangladeshi military personnels on 15th August 1975. An eventful life, full of achievements, the greatest of which was the creation of an independent state of Bangladesh, came to a tragic end.
