"Rabbi Klonymus Kalman Halevi Epstein of Krakow (1751-1823) was a Hasidic leader and creative preacher, who lived and worked during the period of the spread of Hasidism inspired by the Baal Shem Tov (Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, c. 1700-1760). He witnessed the transition of Hasidism from intimate circles of elites and individuals of virtue to a broad renewal movement, which continued, grew, and spread. Rabbi Klonymus Kalman lived - at least for part of his life - in Krakow, and may even have been the first Hasidic tzaddik to lead a Hasidic community in a large city. "The Light and the Sun" - as he is often called after his book - is an important link in the establishment of Hasidism. Rabbi Klonymus Kalman's sermons include descriptions of various types of charismatic leadership, as he saw in every way an authentic representation of the religious journey.
