- Summary:
- On June 4, 1943, the Armed Forces overthrew President Ramón S. Castillo, ending the "Infamous Decade" marked by widespread electoral fraud. This event, whether seen as a coup or revolution, led to the suppression of political parties, industrial development, stricter labor regulations, increased influence of the Catholic Church, mandatory religious education in public schools, and purges in universities. Cultural freedoms were significantly curtailed. Most importantly, it marked the rise of Juan Domingo Perón, who, after serving as Secretary of Labor, Minister of War, and Vice President, was briefly imprisoned before his release by the October 17 mobilization. He ran for president in 1946 and won, marking the birth of Peronism. This book, compiled by Miranda Lida and Ignacio A. López, examines the enduring impact of these changes on Argentina's politics, society, and economy. By comparing the country in 1943 to 1946 or 1948, one sees overwhelming differences: stronger labor unions, progressive labor laws, a weakened UCR, growing state control, and a polarized society. Many of these changes still resonate today.
