James Dumaresq Jr., born 1848, was the second son of Philip Dumaresq and Margarita DeBlois. His mother and older sister Frances had both died in an accident the year before this letter was written. James had two younger brothers, Herbert and Francis (both mentioned in this letter), two older sisters, and an older brother, Philip Kearney Dumaresq.
