Summary:
Sturgis tells Cushing that he would like to see a bad season's trade in Canton this year, just to discourage more adventurers from joining the competition, but he expects future business will be good. He also informs Cushing that 46-year-old Ralph Bennet Forbes is ailing and relies upon Cushing to help his son Robert in the family business.

John Perkins Cushing and Robert Bennet Forbes, Sr, were cousins descended from James Perkins (1733-1773). William F Sturgis was a distant relation, through his uncle Russell Sturgis's marriage to Elizabeth Perkins, Cushing and Forbes's aunt. All three men were involved in the Canton trade.
