- Sturgis tells Cushing that he would like to see a bad season's trade in Canton this year, just to discourage more adventurers from joining the competition, but he expects future business will be good. He also informs Cushing that 46-year-old Ralph Bennet Forbes is ailing and relies upon Cushing to help his son Robert in the family business.

- John Perkins Cushing and Robert Bennet Forbes, Sr, were cousins descended from James Perkins (1733-1773). William F Sturgis was a distant relation, through his uncle Russell Sturgis's marriage to Elizabeth Perkins, Cushing and Forbes's aunt. All three men were involved in the Canton trade.
