Summary:
An undated letter from the ship's master, E W Ruggles, to his passengers, requesting their assistance in pumping water from the leaky ship. Two statements certifying the ship's soundness, the first (29 November 1848) signed by Ezra Bucknam of New York, and the second (1 December 1848) signed by Samuel Candler, Marine Surveyor at the Port of New York. An insurance company agreement (23 January 1849) for protection of the Balance's cargo. A receipt for goods purchased for the Balance from Henry Waldron, a New York manufacturer of paints, oils, varnishes, etc. (9 March 1849). Two bills of lading (29 March and 25 August 1849) for goods shipped on the Balance by individuals, John McCrackin and and Jose Ignacio Palma, plus miscellaneous receipts. The first bill of lading is for goods shipped from New York to San Francisco; the second is for goods shipped from Talcahuano, Chile to San Francisco.
