Summary:
The journal kept aboard the ship Bengal details a voyage from Oceania to Salem (Mar 1832 to Feb 1835). Home port was Salem; owners were Pickering Dodge, Benjamin Pickman, and Joseph Peabody; master was George Russell; log keeper was William Silver. It is a personal journal describing wind, weather, life at sea, sightings of ships, sightings of animals, whaling activities, naval desertions, shipboard illnesses including scurvy, encounters with indigenous people, provisions, disorderly conduct and punishment of seamen, shipboard occupations, and sightings of shipwrecks. Includes poetry, a crew list, illustrations of whales, and a dictionary of native words. Also includes account books for the ship, containing accounts payable and receivable (1829 to 1830).
