Joseph Bowditch was born in 1700, one of 11 children of Captain William Bowditch and his wife Mary Gardner Bowditch. Joseph became a shipping merchant in Salem, as well as sheriff, court clerk and justice of the peace. He married Elizabeth Hunt and had three children, Joseph Jr, Mary and Elizabeth. He died in 1780.Please note that some of the metadata for this document has been drawn from the Peabody Essex Museum catalogue.
