- Joseph Bowditch was born in 1700, one of 11 children of Captain William Bowditch and his wife Mary Gardner Bowditch. Joseph became a shipping merchant in Salem, as well as sheriff, court clerk and justice of the peace. He married Elizabeth Hunt and had three children, Joseph Jr, Mary and Elizabeth.
