- The Chase family was one of the founding families of Nantucket. They established themselves as seamen; Reuben Chase served under John Paul Jones and was made famous because he was the inspiration for the character Long Tom Coffin in Cooper's The Pilot: A Tale of the Sea. His brother, Joseph, made regular voyages to France, while Captain Peter Chase ran sealing and cargo vessels to Australia and China.
