"Orly Gal's book, "And all the while messengers keep running back and forth to my childhood ," describes and interprets the works of three central Hebrew prose writers who return through their writing to the realms of their childhood, which are also the main realms of the renewed Zionism. Between the late 1960s and the 1980s, literary works dealing with childhood in the Land of Israel from a new perspective were published: they were written by writers who were born in the country and were perceived both by the social and cultural hegemony of the labor movements and the "working settlement," and by themselves, as the first "natural" and "native" sphere in the country. Yaakov Shabtai, Yehoshua Kenaz, and Meir Shalev are sons of the labor movements and the "working settlement" who return in their writing to autobiographical childhood realms from a child's perspective. The works reveal a double-faced nostalgic stance that reflects a sense of fracture or lack within a damaged present, alongside a look back at an autobiographical childhood space steeped in intimacy and longing. In their works, the authors search for lost continuity and belonging; they reveal personal disillusionment processes that also have national and historical aspects. How is the past represented? How are the past's present and the author's contemporary present portrayed through the presence of the double expression of time? And what is the significance of the literary return to what is burned into consciousness as representations with a symbolic presence in childhood in the Land of Israel? These are some of the questions that arise in light of the authors' look back and late return to childhood through writing. And all the time messengers run back and forth to my childhood.
