Summary:
"In 1841, a retiring banker bought and interleaved the Paisley section of a copy of the new edition of Fowler's Paisley and Johnstone Commerical Directory. He annotated the Directory for his successors with notes about many of the inhabitants of the town, their financial affairs, behaviour and characters. The book discovered by John Malden in a secondhand bookshop in Paisley and offers a unique insight into Paisley of the 1830s-1840s, which was in a period of serious financial crisis, reflected in the notes. It has been transcribed by John Malden, who has written an Introduction to Paisley of the time, accompanied by an analysis of bankruptcy in Scotland in the nineteenth century by Professor John Finlay.".
