Summary:
Johanna (Johis) Alarcón (1992) is a freelance photojournalist and visual storyteller based in Ecuador. Her work is focused on social justice, human rights, and gender related issues. The book "Cimarrona" comprising documentary and community photography is the result of five years portraying the stories, cultural expressions and spiritual ancestral practices of the maroon and Afro-descendant women. The "Cimarronas" are rebellious women and strategists who have led the liberation of the Afro diasporic since their arrival in the Americas in the 16th century. The book includes a fanzine created collectively by women of different generations, in which they tell their personal and community stories about racism and the strength of marronage.
