Summary:
This publication is dedicated to the trajectory and work of the artist from Minas Gerais Maria Lira Marques (Araçuaí, 1945), that broke barriers and nomenclatures, establishing herself in the contemporary art circuit. More than a monograph, the book seeks to highlight the artist's visceral relationship with the territory that forged her, the Vale do Jequitinhonha, as well as rescuing elements of the popular tradition in her aesthetics and practice. Her artistic trajectory is presented through a body of works - drawings, paintings and ceramic objects -, in addition to essays by curator Rodrigo Moura, who signs the organization of the book, and researcher and curator Luciara Ribeiro. The publication also incorporates historical images recorded by Dutch-born Brazilian folklorist and composer, Franciscan friar Francisco van der Poel (Frei Chico, an important figure in Maria Lira's life), a complete chronology, and testimonies of the artist originally published in 1983.
