"Hêmba", which means "soul and spirit" in the Xavante language (also Shavante, Chavante, Akuen, A'uwe, Akwe, Awen, or Akwen), comprises a selection of ethnic photographic images from the author's collection composed of more than two thousand images. Taken by Edgar Kanaykõ Xakriabá, a photographer and storyteller who belongs to the ethnic communities of Xakriabá, located in the region between the municipalities of São João das Missões and Itacarambi in the State of Minas Gerais, the images highlight the urgency of weaving non-Western stories of Brazilian photography. The work not only invites readers to get to know the indigenous world of Xakriabá and other ethnic communities, but also to deepen the experience of looking at and understanding worlds invisible to a Western society. With texts by the author and Fabiana Bruno.
