- Summary:
- Lygia Pape (Nova Friburgo 1927-Rio de Janeiro 2004) was one of the most acclaimed and influential Brazilian artists of the 20th century. As well as collaborating with filmmakers, Pape herself produced interesting films and videos from the mid-1960s on. Veronica Stigger recalls the story of one of her films, "La Nouvelle Création" produced in 1967. The work in question is the starting point for a reflection on the conquest of space. Stigger uses documents and references that contextualize the creation of Pape's film. The author moves us through a cosmic imagination according to which it is not only the idea of a new man that emerges, but of a world that emerges from this event. In the 20th century, the race for space is mainly between the Americans and the Soviets, intensifying a polarized dispute for the global imagination.
