Summary:
The publication features photographs and documents presented in the exhibition Pequenas Áfricas: o Rio que o samba inventou [Little Africas: the Rio that samba invented], which reconstructs the cultural scene in Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century, when communities of African descendants created urban samba. The exhibition, on display at IMS Paulista from October 2023 to April 2024, addresses the complex networks of work, solidarity and spirituality built during this historical period, as well as their repercussions in the present, from samba schools to terreiros and backyards. The catalog features photographs of documents from the period, newspaper articles, photographs of artists featured in the exhibition, as well as essays by the four curators: Angélica Ferrarez, Luiz Antonio Simas, Vinícius Natal and Ynaê Lopes dos Santos.".
