Summary:

Among her production, Carmela Gross (born Maria do Carmo da Costa Gross, 1946) highlights large-scale works that are inserted in urban spaces and that signal a critical view of architecture and urban history. According to the artist, the common thread of her diverse production, beyond the peculiarities of each work, is the basic concept of working-in-the-city. From the conception, through the production process to the placement of her works in the exhibition site, Carmela Gross seeks to emphasize the dialectical relationship between the work and the space, and between the work and the public, seeking to engender artistic perceptions that bring to light the semantic charge of the place. Terrain vacant occupies a (non)place that echoes this artistic thought, configuring itself as a kind of conceptual diptych, a book-work of art, marked by two in(ter)dependent parts. The first brings a set of 21 works with the drawing-stain technique developed by the artist, without texts. The other part contains a broad conversation between curator Paulo Miyada and Carmela, starting from the primordial relationship of her production with the city, its inhabitants, objects and urban equipment, as well as works and artists that influenced her and with whom she dialogues.

One features a full-scale reproduction of a set of 24 drawings in graphite powder, resin and ballpoint pen on paper, produced in 1993 and digitally colored on 2023.
