Summary:
People have lived in and passed through what we call the Little Colorado River Valley in northeastern Arizona for at least 13,000 years. Many of them, as people do, left evidence of their presence through artifacts and petroglyphs. / This report details archaeological survey and excavations on and near Rock Art Ranch (RAR) conducted over six years by the University of Arizona School of Anthropology/Arizona State Museum archaeological field school. These studies reveal a very different history from that previously found in the pueblos and around the ancestral Hopi villages that make up the Homol'ovi Settlement Cluster (HSC) just 20 miles away. / As reflected in the rock art in Chevelon Canyon ("The Steps") in RAR, there was significant use of the nearby landscape during the Paleoindian, Archaic, and early farming periods--occupations largely missing in the HSC area. Also different at RAR is the general lack of ceramics and occupations concurrent with the occupations of the HSC villages, although there is evidence indicating continued use of The Steps by later Hopi peoples. / Richly illustrated with more than 250 figures and 200 tables, this volume reports on the RAR area and adds to our knowledge of this remote and previously archaeologically unexplored region of the U.S. Southwest. -- back cover.
