Summary:
Humans are visual creatures. Even pre-Socratic philosophy celebrated the sense of sight as the noblest, making the eye the most prominent sense of sight. Nevertheless, from antiquity onwards, in German idealism and in the philosophy of the Enlightenment, seeing was devalued compared to conceptual cognition, which is connected to the contempt for the body and the senses. Seeing is given appropriate recognition in the phenomenology of perception by Merleau-Ponty, by Bergson and by Sartre, whose theory of the gaze is fundamental to a theory of the subject and intersubjectivity. The study proves that seeing is fundamental to our cognition, our access to the world and our existence and cannot be replaced.
