"Yuck!" - we involuntarily disgust ourselves with what could be harmful to us and threatens us. Disgust protects - one might think. But disgust is more. It's not only a physiological response, it's also a cultural achievement. Disgust plays a colorful role in many contexts as interpersonal behaviors and perceptions. In this volume disgust has been ethnographically explored and appears as a cultural player. The authors are looking for places such as hospital wards, public toilets, sailing ships or video booths, they address innards, pranks and rites de passage.

»Igitt!« - Wir ekeln uns unwillkürlich vor dem, was uns schädlich sein könnte und uns bedroht. Ekel als Affekt schützt - so möchte man meinen. Doch Ekel ist mehr. Er ist nicht nur eine physiologische Reaktion, sondern auch eine kulturelle Errungenschaft. Ekel spielt in vielerlei Zusammenhängen eine schillernde Rolle und strukturiert zwischenmenschliche Situationen, Verhaltensweisen und Wahrnehmungen. In den Beiträgen dieses Bandes wird der Ekel ethnografisch als kultureller Mitspieler erkundet. Die AutorInnen suchen Orte wie Krankenhausstationen, öffentliche Toiletten, Segelschiffe oder Videokabinen auf, sie thematisieren Innereien, Scherzartikel, Aufnahmerituale und Dschungelprüfungen. Neben viel Ekelhaftem entdecken sie dabei auch eine Menge Unverhofftes, Lehrreiches, Lustvolles und Spielerisches.
