Summary:
Connections between word and image have been addressed throughout history. As part of the ongoing medialization of life worlds issues of the production, distribution and perception of images have become especially virulent. This is true not only for the century of mass media, but most notably for the age of digitization. The contributors of this volume ask how images can be produced, described and interpreted today, how we can orient ourselves in visual worlds, which skills are needed, and what it means to be able to understand visual worlds.
