Summary:
Julio Escámez Carrasco was a highly creative, skilled and versatile painter who painted in Chile from 1940 to 1974, until he went into exile to Costa Rica and died there in 2015. At the request of the owner of a pharmacy in the city of Concepcion, Chile, Mrs. Maria Maluje David, the artist painted in 1957 his masterful mural of medical and pharmaceutical content named "Historia de la Medicina y de la Farmacia en Chile" (The History of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chile). There is information that indicates that Escámez alternated with Diego Rivera in Concepción, in the mid-1950s and perhaps he must have heard from Rivera that he had just painted in the Hospital La Raza in Mexico City his last grand mural "Historia de la medicina en México. El pueblo en demanda de salud" (History of Medicine in Mexico: the people's demand for better health), that Escámez probably saw when visiting Mexico. Authors Leslie Fernández Barrera and Bárbara Lama Andrade based their book on interviews and on the search of diverse archives. The cover of the book corresponds to the invitation to its inauguration in 1958, an archive belonging to the Millar Gutiérrez family
