Summary:
In 2021, cigarette manufacturing company Philip Morris International (PMI) acquired Vectura, a British pharmaceutical company that manufactures asthma inhalers. PMI, known for its best-selling product Marlboro, explained that they acquired Vectura with the view of diversifying its portfolio. However, following backlash from health groups, PMI then sold Vectura three years later in 2024 for a loss. This case examines the ethical reasons for the backlash that PMI faced when it bought and sold Vectura, and asks students to decide if the reaction against PMI is justified.
