- Summary:
- The publication of the extensive utopia "Omnibona", unpublished until 2017 and almost unknown, has modified our ideas about the history of the utopian genre. It is, after the work of Thomas More, the first utopia in the strict sense and also the first in a vernacular; constitutes an extensive dialogue dating back to 1540 that contains a broad proposal for reforms of Castile of that period, in which the most lively issues of the time are addressed without shying away from such controversial issues as the Inquisition, the conquest of the Indies or the life of the clergy and prelates. Written in a simple way, in attention to its addressee, a young prince barely in his teens, the work represents an amendment to the entire government of Charles V and proposes a new taxation system that redistributes all the income of the State and the Church. This book includes twelve studies focused on specific aspects of the text. From them, the perception arises that "Omnibona" should be read as the fruit of political and religious reformism in the sphere of the royal councils and the formators of Prince Philip.
