"From the fourteenth century, the justices of the peace formed the bedrock of royal justice across most counties of England. Appointed by the Crown at irregular intervals, the justices, a mixture of magnates, local gentry and professional lawyers, were charged with keeping the king’s peace, holding judicial sessions to try offenders and overseeing a range of other local matters. Membership of the commission was also an important symbol of local influence and royal favour, and a key element in the career of any landholder or legal professional.
