Summary:
"From the fourteenth century, the justices of the peace formed the bedrock of royal justice across most counties of England. Appointed by the Crown at irregular intervals, the justices, a mixture of magnates, local gentry and professional lawyers, were charged with keeping the king’s peace, holding judicial sessions to try offenders and overseeing a range of other local matters. Membership of the commission was also an important symbol of local influence and royal favour, and a key element in the career of any landholder or legal professional. This volume provides details of all the surviving commissions issued during the reign of the first Tudor monarch, updating earlier analysis published in the Calendar of Patent Rolls, correcting largely minor but numerous scribal and editorial errors and omissions, and supplementing the well-used Chancery material with further information taken from equivalent enrolments in the memoranda rolls of the Exchequer."--Page 4 of cover.
