Summary:
Given the dominant place occupied by experts in our society, the citizen may be led to wonder what an expert is and on what basis his authority rests. How can he assess his credibility, and to whom to turn in cases (frequent) where several experts dissent? The result of the work of nineteen researchers, this collective work presents the social character of the expert, the socio-political uses of his work as well as the ways of arbitrating his claims in our society. One of the great strengths of this book is its multidisciplinary character, which places great emphasis on philosophy, political science, history, sociology and communication sciences. Each text offers a state of the art on a specific issue and gives explanatory keys to current problems: the challenge of public statistics, the place of values and citizens in public decisions, the social role of science, the regulation of groups professionals or power relationships in digital spaces.
