Summary:

This exhibition is a retrospective of Cunha's life and prolific career. It follows Cunha's life from his humble beginnings in the cultural hub of Bahia, Salvador to his blossomed career as a visual artist. Divided into a biographical trilogy, the exhibition presents the artist's trajectory, following his journeys through Bahia and his national and international projection. The show emphasizes the experimental character, the diversity of languages and the political commitment of the artist and his work and showcases over 300 bodies of art encapsulating Cunha's Bahian pride and experimental eye. "With a production spanning six decades and a major reference for many artists, J. Cunha was only incorporated into the Pinacoteca's collection in 2023, and this late inclusion says more about the shortcomings of the museum's collection that about the relevance of the artist's work and the powerful dialogues it promotes." -Page 7.
