Summary:
"If you browse through manuals on Roman architecture, these are mostly focused on the architecture of the city of Rome and Italy. Other areas are usually treated only peripherally, so it is easy to create the impression that 'Roman architecture' is a uniformity phenomenon that produced the same buildings from the provinces of Lusitania to Armenia and from Cyrenaica to Britannia. This is due solely for practical reasons of limited scope of manuals as well as a necessary focus on certain aspects. A closer study with the architecture of different geographical areas and cultural spaces of the Roman Empire shows that one must not at all assume a uniform architecture and the same types of construction that exist everywhere. Depending on factors such as the available resources and building materials, but also the own traditions of construction technology and decoration, local peculiarities emerge, and cultural, social and economic factors also play a role. To summarize basic characteristics of the regional peculiarities of Asia Minor and paradigmatically represent the regional characteristics of Roman architecture is the aim of the study presented here, which goes back to a 30 years of engagement with the architecture of Roman Asia Minor."
