- Summary:
- 2024 marks 200 years since the birth of symphonist extraordinaire Anton Bruckner, and the world-renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra continues their bicentennial Bruckner cycle under the baton of brilliant young maestro Klaus Mäkelä, set to become the orchestra's 8th Chief Conductor in 2027. He leads them here in Bruckner's Symphony No. 5, one of the composer's most intricate and challenging pieces, a sonic reflection of a time of personal turmoil that ultimately concludes in harmony and exultation. For Mäkelä, a great admirer of Bruckner's music, the Fifth is "the greatest achievement as far as the symphonic form goes… It’s the best mindfulness, because you don’t have to think or worry about anything; you sit down, and Bruckner takes care of you. Slow music does not mean you have to work—Bruckner comes to you too. Bruckner comes to you. You don’t need to be intellectual to understand the music."
