The plot opens with a sublime chorus evoking Sister Angelica’s tranquil life in the convent. The sisters rejoice as one of three magical evenings in the year draws closer, when the sunlight seems to turn the fountain’s water to gold. But this peaceful spell is broken by a mysterious visitor: the princess.
