- "מסה זו נועדה לשמש מבוא ל"מכאן ומכאן", יצירתו הסיפורית האקספרימנטלית המופתית של יוסף חיים ברנר, ולסלק מעליה מסורת של פרשנות מוטעית, שמצאה בה חוסר סדר והתכחשות לאסתטיקה מחמת צמידות לענייני החיים ה"בוערים" כביכול. המסה חושפת את המצע האסתטי המודע והמכולכל של היצירה ואת סוד הסדר המונח בתשתיתה, הכרוך בריסוק סיפור המעשה הסיבתי-כרונולוגי ובהחלפתו במערכת מורכבת של אנלוגיות הנכרכות כולן סביב מוטיב התיאטרון ותפיסת הקיום ה"תיאטרלית": כל העולם במה. היא מנסה להדריך את הקורא בקריאה לרוחב של היצירה במקום הקריאה המקובלת לאורך. תוך כך נטלה על עצמה המסה תפקידים נוספים: הפקעתו של ברנר מן הקדושה שנכפתה עליו במודע וששימשה צרכים פוליטיים של תנועת העבודה הציונית, וכן הבלטת העובדה שהיה בראש ובראשונה "אדם כותב", סופר מכור לשליחותו, למרות הפקפוק העקרוני ביכולתה של הספרות לחולל שינוי במצב האנושי. מהלך חייו של ברנר כוון במודע ובהסכמה פנימית מלאה לכתיבתו הבלתי פוסקת בשבעה ז'אנרים: רומנים, נובלות, מחזות, סיפורים קצרים, ביקורת ספרותית, פובליציסטיקה חברתית-לאומית ותרגום (דוסטוייבסקי, האופטמן וכו'). ברנר לא היה רק "איש מכאובות", אלא גם סופר שמח במעשיו ובהצלחתם"-- Book flap.
