"The most important political conflict that took place in the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel during the years of World War II took place in the economic arena. The book 'To the Brink of a State' outlines the ups and downs in the process of creating a broad consensus in the settlement regarding coordination between private, sectoral, and technocratic economic interests and a joint political struggle to achieve the political goals of Zionism. The formation of the state during this period as a realistic political goal - as opposed to a symbolic or declared goal - was influenced by the increasing importance of industry in the life of the settlement and by the changing assessments during the war regarding the absorption capacity of Jews in the Land of Israel. Industry stood at the center of the tension between 'building' and 'being built' in those days. In the willingness to grapple with dilemmas that were mainly in the development of the country, one can see a kind of superficial look at the face of history, a kind of escape to regions full of inspiration in bleak times of despair, trauma, and pervasive annihilation.
