"For I too have a share and inheritance in our adorned language, the mistress of tongues" (Miriam in a letter to Mapo, 1862) Miriam Markel-Mosesson, a Hebrew scholar in the second half of the 19th century, was born in the city of Wilkowice in Lithuania. Miriam was a writer and translator, one of the first educated women to write in Hebrew, with extensive knowledge of Hebrew literature and canonical Jewish sources, and adept in European languages ​​and world literature. Her literary works include letters, translations, short stories, poetry, and essays. Her translation, from German into Hebrew, of the book "The Jews in England" (1869), is her most famous work, and it is what marked her entry into the educated circles of her time. The main concern of her writings is the Hebrew language and its dissemination, as well as the desire for social reform, and especially for the equality of women. Today, her letters, written in fluent Hebrew, are best known. It is full of references to Hebrew sources, to her friends, the great scholars, including Avraham Mapo and Yehuda Leib Gordon (113), with whom she corresponded for about twenty years.
