Over the last thirty years, numerous works have been published on both sides of the Atlantic regarding the 'metaphysical' detective novel, but the broader question of metaphysics in the detective novel has rarely been addressed. This collection is made up of various literary 'counter-experiments' to philosopher Siegfried Kracauer's critical philosophical diagnosis of the reading of the novel: General approaches to the genre according to its major writing traditions (American crime novels, postmodern crime novels, etc.) and case studies specific to the great names of crime literature (such as Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Agatha Christie, etc.) offer a range of original and varied poetic perspectives on a complex, and a priori surprising subject when applied in such a way to crime fiction, which very few have dared to tackle.

Si, depuis trente ans, de nombreux travaux ont été publiés de part et d'autre de l'Atlantique sur le roman policier « métaphysique », la plus vaste question de la métaphysique dans le roman policier a rarement été abordée. Doit-on considérer le roman policier métaphysique comme un sous-genre à part ? Toute enquête n'est-elle pas quête métaphysique ? Quel est ce « frisson métaphysique » dont parle Umberto Eco, et comment se manifeste-t-il ? Ce recueil est constitué d'approches généralistes du genre selon ses grandes traditions d'écriture (roman noir américain, romans policiers postmodernes...) et de cas d'études spécifiques aux grands noms des littératures policières (Edgar Allan Poe, Wilkie Collins, Agatha Christie...) offrant des perspectives poétiques originales et variées sur le sujet.
