Summary:
Julian "J3PO" Pollack epitomizes the 21st century musician, specifically in his aptitude for combining multiple music genres. Notoriously influenced by jazz and by urban repertoires in general, the American keyboardist and producer has played alongside rapper Talib Kweli, Latin combo Santana and Californian saxophonist Kamasi Washington. He has diversified his career over the years, composing the soundtrack for the film The Sound of The Wind and exploring the mysteries of electronic music. Here Pollack takes advantage of the studio's superb keyboard collection to deliver an inspired mini-concert. This session, two-thirds fuelled by the trilogy Small Plates, Mains and Sweet Treats, embodies a singular universe. Backed by an experienced band, he is in his element performing the jazz-rock medley "Dovetail/500 Miles High". Taken from the excellent Mains, "Start Sumpthin Up" opens with a virtuosic sequence followed by arrangements that are by turns groovy and mellow. Finally, "I've Changed My Mind" and its layered vintage synthesizers impress with their boldness and precision. For adventurous ears. Vincent Caffiaux.
