Sheridan, as manager of the Theatre Royal in Smock Alley, forbade one of his actors, West Digges, to give part of a speech in James Miller's 'Mahomet the imposter', on the 2nd of March, 1754. Popular fury over this action was such that, after a number of attempts to justify himself, Sheridan left Dublin for two years.
