- Summary:
- The Shop Assistant journal was a weekly issued journal aimed at working shop assistants, although it started life as a monthly publication in July 1896. It offered news and encouragement for labour reform and about shop life, targeting Labour strongholds in the North of England, the West Country, Scotland and London. The journal evolved to serve as the official organ of the amalgamated Union of shop assistants, warehousemen and clerks. It contained regular product advertisement intervals featuring products such as chocolate, clothing, medicine and stationary, many of which take on a military appeal approach after WW1. Contents include information pertaining to advice for workers, unions within the industry to become a member of (with information on why and how to do this), campaigning for regulation in work hours, wages etc. Sometimes includes interest pieces related to the industry in a variety of ways, e.g. the death of Queen Victoria. Occasionally cartoon illustrations and poems are included.
