- Bohemian rabbi and halakhic authority, author of עולת שמואל (responsa), פעולת אמת (halakhah), and אהבת אמת (sermons); among his teachers in Prague were Elazar Fleckeles (and he was a peer of Bezaleel Ronsburg); Rabbi in Kaladey (complete German name Kaladai an der Lainsitz; Czech name Koloděje nad Lužnicí) and of the districts of Tábor and České Budějovice, after which he succeeded Samuel Landau in Prague.
- Summary:
- Responsa document regarding the laws of Mikveh and purification, with specific attention to the Mikveh in Vlachovo Březí, and answering the questions posed by Hilsner previously (on Maimonides, Mishneh Torah Avot ha-ṭumʼah IX, regarding generic water bathing following the Mikveh, and Nissim of Gerondi's commentary to the Talmud, Shabbat (commentary to 36b) regarding water heated on the Sabbath); this responsa is printed in the author's ʻOlat Shemuʼel chapter 27 (the printed responsa was edited and mostly re-phrased). Verso with regards to members of the addressee's community; Hilsner was the local authority on Jewish law (מ"ץ) for Vlachovo Březí ("religionslehrer" in the 1793 Bohemian census; the German name of the town was called Wällischbirken in south Bohemia), and uncle of Leopold Hilsner of the 1899 Hilsner Affair (also known as the Polna Affair).
