Summary:

The Frente Nacional de Artes Plásticas (FNAP) was a collective of collectives founded in 1952, just at a moment of "cross" between two adverse aesthetic trends: the realism of the so-called Mexican School of Painting and what has been called "Ruptura". The organization proposed the construction of a large-scale cultural project, which included improving the economic conditions of creators, especially young people who lacked dissemination and support in a country where there was not enough market for artistic work and the largest patron was the State. Painters, teachers of artistic education such as Rosendo Soto and Manuel Echauri and teachers such as Ignacio Márquez Rodiles and Miguel Salas Anzures, some of whom were active in the Mexican Communist Party (PCM) or other leftist groups organized this collective. The FNAP also fought for the rescue of national heritage and its dissemination abroad. Raúl Cano Monroy, an art historian and investigator, gives an account of the history of this group inserted in the "Mexicanist" world of painting and art with also pedagogical and social purposes. "For an art at the service of the people" is based on works that belong to the personal archive of the painter Rosendo Soto, who served as secretary general of this group.
