From the Colton Storm catalogue: "Order for tools in preparation for building Sutter's Mill, where California's gold was discovered in January 1848. Reading was willing to hold himself responsible for payment of the tools. A list of the required tools follows the letter and is signed by Reading. Reading was the founder of the famous Reading Diggings. His memoirs appear in the Quarterly of the Society of California Pioneers, Volume VII, No. 3, September, 1930. He crossed the plains in 1843. R. M. Sherman is listed in Kimball's San Francisco Directory for 1850 as a Horse keeper."
