- From the Colton Storm catalogue: "John Lyle made the overland trip to Oregon in 1845 and immediately upon his arrival in Oregon opened a school - the first in Polk County. The following year it was noticed as Jefferson Institute in the Oregon Spectator for February 5, 1846. Lyle was later clerk of the Provisional Court and of the District Court. He died in 1862 while at the mines in Eastern Oregon."
