From the Colton Storm catalogue: "Dr. Oxley tells little in his letters of his political aspirations and achievements. He was, particularly after 1855, heavily involved in California politics. He had been a Whig and later became a Know-nothing leader and member of the state legislature. In 1857, he joined Henry A. Crabb in the ill-fated filibustering expedition into Sonora as surgeon-general. He was among those who lost their lives before the Mexican firing squads at Caborca. Accompanying the series of Oxley letters is an Autograph Letter, signed by J. M. Vansycke. 1857 May 15, San Francisco. To A. W. Francisco. The Vansycke letter describes and comments on the Crabb expedition and mentions Oxley as a member of the party. The recipient was a newspaper man on the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer."
