"Alice Cannon, from whom I first heard of Big Road Walker, has been cooking for my sister in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for a number of years ... Alice, as might be inferred, is from Newberry, South Carolina. She tells me that her father told her stories about these characters when she was a child, and that his father told them to him."--Pages ix-x. Alice Cannon is possibly to be identified with Alice R. [Alice Ruth?] Cannon (born approximately 1904 in Newberry, S.C.), daughter of Oscar Tarrant Cannon (born approximately 1873 in South Carolina) and Lelia Beatrice Neely (born approximately 1876 in Georgia) and sister of Alvin N. (Alvin Neely) Cannon (1910-1996), a contributor to the Illinois Writers Project's study The Negro in Illinois.
