"Students with a strong sense of belonging in a classroom perform better academically. When students don't feel that they belong, their performance suffers. It's not just some fluffy psycho-mumble jumble; there is a strong research base that supports the need for schools to create systems that foster student belonging. In fact, several meta-analyses point to the fact that belonging keeps us learning. The effect size for belonging is .46, right at the average of all the things that we do in school to ensure learning. It serves as a gatekeeper for all the other aspects of learning to take root.
