""New East is an in-depth historical study of the history of Zionist and Israeli Orientalism. The roots of this field of knowledge - the study of Arabic, Islam and the history of the Middle East - lie in German universities of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: most of its founders in Israel were German Jews who grew up in the Orientalist tradition of Central Europe, and it was they who brought the field of knowledge to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and from there to the entire academic system. Through an analysis of rich archival documentation in German, Arabic, English and Hebrew, the book outlines the complex process of the migration of Orientalist knowledge from Germany to Israel, focusing on the question of what happened to research, and to the researchers themselves, when the encounter with the Orient turned from a textual-philological one to an actual physical encounter, full of contradictions and tensions, with the intensifying Jewish-Arab conflict as its background. Among other things, it documents the tasks that Orientalists took on outside the study room and the library, such as the attempt to bring Jews and Arabs closer together and the cooperation with The security establishment. The book describes the unique trajectory of development of the field of Orientalism from the mid-1920s to the mid-1960s, and sheds new light on the development of academic research as a whole in Mandatory Palestine and in the early days of the State of Israel.
