Summary:
"This small book of essays is a unique and incisive contribution to an understanding of the life of Kaspar Hauser, a delicate spiritual mystery whose importance for humanity does not diminish. In the title essay, Peter Selg outlines the events, words, and mood of Kaspar Hauser's confirmation, guiding the reader toward a deeper understanding of the significance of this event in Hauser's life and destiny. On the basis of the exact account of Heinrich Fuhrmann--the religious instructor and pastor who celebrated the confirmation--Selg paints a vivd picture of Hauser's religious and spiritual awakening. The second and third essays touch on individual aspects of Georg Friedrich Daumer's assertion that the "question of Kaspar Hauser" is at the same time the "question of Germany." Selg also attempts to outline the historical struggles of that time and their legacy today. Looking at the tragic figure of the poet Friedrich Hölderlin, Selg explores correspondences between the lives of Hauser and Hölderlin in relation to the spiritual task of Central Europe. Turning to Rudolf Steiner, Selg then continues this exploration, taking into consideration Steiner's profound statements about Hauser, his mission, and his tragic fate." -- Back cover.
