- Major study and extensive work that documents and contextualizes the social life of the walled city of San Juan and the multiple elements that have constituted to its urban life: human interaction, on the one hand, and the planned and built environment on the other. Ecclesiastical and military housing and buildings marked not only his transcendent aspirations, but also the fears of its population. The author María de los Ángeles Castro Arroyo is a researcher, historian, professor and official of the Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) in Río Piedras. In 1980 she wrote "Arquitectura en San Juan de Puerto Rico. Siglo XIX". This book is based on her doctoral thesis. At the end of 2022 she published a new revised and expanded edition, under the title "Amurallados: sociedad y arquitectura en el viejo San Juan (1509-1898)", where the renown historian presents new findings on the urban and social aspects of the city.
