Summary:
Minimalist trailblazer in intimate performance. Riley will be forever associated with landmark ‘60s recordings such as "In C" and "A Rainbow In Curved Air", albums that are key entries in the canon of minimalism. Throughout a long and distinguished career he has worked with great soloists such as trumpeter Chet Baker and been very vocal about the importance of jazz pianists, above all Art Tatum, Bud Powell and Bill Evans, in his musical development. This solo piano performance by Riley in 1999 is an opportunity to hear him investigate a stripped down setting in which he has been able to develop his unique language. The carefully focused repetition and modulations of phrase lead to emotionally charged, if not engrossing narratives. While Riley has been synonymous with innovations in the studio throughout his career, his work on stage, exhibited in this concert, is remarkable. Kevin Le Gendre
