Summary:

In the great history of hip-hop, dance battles hold a central place. This art of competing on the dance floor survived hip-hop's emergence from the underground; better still, it has gradually become a mainstay with a religious following, an entity in its own right within the movement. The sheer energy and pleasure of pitting yourself against another, at a time when adversary was both a burning issue and a visceral catalyst for the need to win, has remained intact throughout the years. Organized as part of the Karavel festival, the Can You rock!? battle brings together international dancers. Either alone or in groups, these diverse artists compete in three distinct areas. While toprock has its own category (1vs1 Toprock), the boundaries between styles are blurred in the others: 2vs2 all style, 2vs2 all style kids, new style, house dance, locking and many other genres cross swords in a rich and delicious mix. In the midst of this jubilant bazaar, one of the oldest hip-hop traditions is perpetuated and revived with flamboyance and talent. It's a joy watching them battle it out. Léance Kalanzau
