- Summary:
- The Au Fil Des Voix Festival positions itself as an amplifier of singular voices, of music from around the world bearing stories, cross-cultural journeys and evolving identities. Jaadu – made up of Titi Robin, the intrepid and borderless French composer, and Faiz Ali Faiz, the most recent in a long line of Qawwali singers – give life to this concept. In this performance, taken from the 2011 edition of the festival, they offer up a transhistorical voyage between real and imagined places, forging shared rhythmic and melodic pathways that feel their way through a vast and luscious landscape. Beyond language, the lyricism inherent in their creations lull us into spaces where color, texture and emotion unfurl in an intoxicating trance, like smoke. Together, the pair wield influences that stem from Andalusia, the Orient, and itinerant Gypsy culture as well as from Sufi Islamic devotional music. Bathed in changing stage lights, they are joined by a chorus of vocalists and an array of percussionists, combining in a harmonic swell that builds like a wave, carrying us towards shores unknown.
